Jeremy Clarkson is wrong about direct cremations – well we would say that, but he has some of his facts wrong.
The main one Is that it is illegal to send the ashes through the post, or by any of the usual delivery firms – no need to worry that Hermes/Evri will chuck Granny in the hedge. Ashes are always delivered in person to the nominated recipient who has to sign for them, unless you opt to collect them from the crematorium or funeral director, or have them scattered at the crematorium.
Secondly, a direct cremation by no means prevents your relatives having a huge party or mournful funeral to celebrate your life. Indeed, whilst cost may be a driving fact for some, for others, the memorial service is the thing, the family just don’t go to the crem. (I wish we had done that for both my parents).
So Jeremy, you can still be taken to Lincoln Cathedral – or maybe down the road to Ely. Or perhaps a great afternoon in the local.
